Model independent pre-processing of X-ray powder diffraction profiles

Precise knowledge of X-ray diffraction profile shape is crucial in the investigation of the properties of matter in crystals powder. Line-broadening analysis is the fourth pre-processing step in most of the full powder pattern fitting softwares. The final result of line-broadening analysis strongly depends on three further steps: noise filtering, removal of background signal, and peak fitting. In this work a new model independent procedure for two of the aforementioned steps (background suppression and peak fitting) is presented. The former is dealt with by using morphological mathematics, while the latter relies on the Hankel–Lanczos singular value decomposition technique. Real X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) intensity profiles of Ceria samples are used to test the performance of the proposed procedure. Results show the robustness of this approach and its capability of efficiently improving the disentangling of instrumental broadening. These features make the proposed approach an interesting and user-friendly tool for the pre-processing of XRPD data.

Application of the HLSVD Technique to the Filtering of X-Ray Diffraction Data

A filter based on the Hankel-Lanczos singular value decomposition (HLSVD) technique is presented and applied for the first time to X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. Synthetic and real powder XRD intensity profiles of nanocrystals are used to study the filter performances with different noise levels. Results show the robustness of the HLSVD filter and its capability to extract easily and effciently the useful crystallographic information. These characteristics make the filter an interesting and user-friendly tool for processing of XRD data.

The independent Component Analysis as a new tool to determine solvent content in protein crystals

Estimating the solvent content in protein crystals is one of the first steps in a macromolecular structure determination. We apply a new statistical technique, the independent component analysis (ICA), to determine the volume fraction of the asymmetric unit of proteins occupied by the solvent. The results for several crystal forms are in good agreement with available ones and allow to validate the method. Its main advantage with respect to existing techniques is that it requires only the knowledge of crystallographic data of structure factors and no a priori information about protein.

Terrain Modeling by kinematical GPS survey

Nico G ; Rutigliano P ; Benedetto C ; Vespe F

This work presents the first results of an experiment aiming to derive a high resolution Digital Terrain Model (DTM) by kinematic GPS surveying. The accuracy of the DTM depends on both the operational GPS precision and the density of GPS samples. The operational GPS precision, measured in the field, is about 10 cm. A Monte Carlo analysis is performed to study the dependence of the DTM error on the sampling procedure. The outcome of this analysis is that the accuracy of the topographic reconstruction is less than 1 m even in areas with a density of samples as low as one sample per 100 m(2), and becomes about 30 cm in areas with at least one sample per 10 m2. The kinematic GPS technique gives a means for a fast and accurate mapping of terrain surfaces with an extension of a few km(2). Examples of application are the investigation of archaeological sites and the stability analysis of landslide prone areas.

On the application of SAR interferometry to geomorphological studies: estimation of landform attributes and mass movement

Catani F ; Farina P ; Moretti S ; Nico G ; Strozzi T

This paper presents two examples of application of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) to typical geomorphological problems. The principles of InSAR are introduced, taking care to clarify the limits and the potential of this technique for geomorphological studies. The application of InSAR to the quantification of landform, attributes such as the slope and to the estimation of landform variations is investigated. Two case studies are presented. A first case study focuses on the problem of measuring landform attributes by interferometric SAR data. The interferometric result is compared with the corresponding one obtained by a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). In the second case study, the use of InSAR for the estimation of landform variations caused by a landslide is detailed. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Comparison of SAR amplitude vs. coherence flood detection methods - A GIS application

Flood area detection from multipass Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data can be performed via amplitude change detection techniques. These methods allow flooded zones to be discriminated only when they are flooded at the time of the second passage, and not at the time of the first one. Coherence derived from multipass SAR interferometry can be used instead, as an indicator of changes in the electromagnetic scattering behaviour of the surface, thus potentially revealing all the areas affected by the flood event at any time between the two passes. The paper presents a prototype application of such techniques, that is, a flood map obtained from ERS-1/2 data taken over Béziers (Southern France), through proper thresholding of a combination of amplitude and coherence information. Produced in the framework of an ESA project, the map consists of a DXF vector file which can be imported directly into most commercial GIS software. © 2000 Taylor & Francis Ltd.
